Many Malaysians are no strangers to allergies.
Nonetheless, a large number of them still do not understand why and what they are allergic to. Most allergies are neither life-threatening nor contagious; they can however be debilitating and adversely impact the patients’ quality of life. Serious and uncontrolled forms of allergies can cause unconsciousness and sometimes be fatal.
Watsons Malaysia and Bayer Co. (Malaysia) joint forces once again to co-organize a health public forum to raise the awareness of allergy and educate the community on optimal management of allergic diseases. Themed “Living with Allergies”, the forum aims to heighten the general public’s awareness of allergy-related problems.

Allergies are a pervasive problem globally, more so in Malaysia, as different allergies are on the rise, from food allergies to environmental exposure, to pets and allergens. Hence, as a socially responsible brand, Watsons identified a strategic partnership with Bayer which shares a similar vision for its customers. The “Living with Allergies” public forum, happening this 10th Nov at The Royal Chulan Damansara will be a platform that is educational and beneficial to our consumers. It also provides an opportunity for us to interact and engage with them,” said Caryn Loh, Managing Director of Watsons Malaysia.
Present at the forum to enlighten the public on allergies and eating right are Dr. Kent Woo, Consultant in Allergy & Immunology and Internal Medicine practicing at Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Mr. Ko Teik Yen, Clinical Hypnotherapist & Mindfulness Therapist of Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Ms Mary Easaw, Chief Dietician of National Heart Institute.
“The prevalence of allergies worldwide has spiked over the past decade; experts have equated the spread to an epidemic-like situation and slowdown of which is not in sight. Depending on the types of allergic disease as well as the age groups, it is estimated that 10-40% of the global population is affected by one or more allergic conditions and this figure is expected to grow in the face of rapid urbanization. In view of the prevalence, allergy is a major healthcare problem. The public needs to learn more about their allergies and take preventive measures to avoid an allergic reaction,” added Dr Kent Woo.
The upcoming public forum will also address the links among the allergic disease, psychological distress and stress. These associations have crucial implications for quality of life and disease management.
One of the speakers at the “Living with Allergies” Forum- Mr. Ko Teik Yen, highlighted that “allergies symptoms are common, very uncomfortable and can be embarrassing and irritating for patients due to the nasty appearance of the rash and the associated itch that can persists for a couple of years. Nevertheless, with appropriate training and practice, patients can be empowered to combat and minimize the detrimental effects of under-treated allergic condition on their quality of life.”
